A tribute to a great man... my grandfather, Bernard Millett Bernard Millett - Bernie by you. Bernard and Phyllis by you. down at the cricket field by you. At lissadel beach. by you.         The stance by you. Bernard and his family by you.

Bernie was an extraordinary man. He was a loving husband, a caring father and an amazing grandfather. He could turn his hand to anything and was interested in everything. Bernard was a carpenter by trade but later in life he enjoyed many other things. Bernie liked art, he created numerous paintings and drawings, and photography and especially video were also big hobbies. The video was a huge interest to him and any family or local event happening he would be there with his camera. The garden was another big part of Bernard's life. He was proud of his garden and it was always well looked after, whether flowers or vegetables. Bernie always had time for me, Adam, Ella, Matthew, and George his grandchildren. Whether he was playing with us, fooling around, showing us something new or sharing his knowledge on pretty much anything you wanted to know about and if he didn't know it he would more than likely have a book that would. Times spent at Nan and Bernies' were always good times. Compiling this tribute was difficult but I wanted to do it. Looking back over old photographs brought back so many good memories of amazing times and events. Bernie, as he was know by his grandchildren, will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him. He had a very fulfilled life, I can see that from just looking in on it, but am glad that I was able to be a part of it until I was twenty. I have learned so much from him and I always admired him. I would like to think that he was a big influence on where i have ended up today being so interested in and passionate about photography, maybe having got a creative streak from him. I remember, when much younger getting to try out his video camera and take some clips with it which I am sure exist on a tape somewhere amongst all the other recorded memories. Bernard passed away on Wednesday March 11th 2009 after a long fight against cancer in his throat. I miss you Bernie. Thanks for being my grandfather. Ben

Edinburgh... THE 360... This is a 360 degree panoramic taken from the top of Scots Monument in Edinburgh. It was more difficult to create than a regular 360 degree pan because at the top of the monument there are pillars dividing the view. I took a series of shorter pans inbetween each two pillars which i then merged together to get the final 360 pan. This must be viewed large!!!

A shadow from above...

I was recently looking through some folders on my computer and I came across this shot that I had taken earlier in the year and must have forgotten about. I like how although the sun is right behind the structure the rest of the sky is still exposed for. I also like the dramatic shadow caused by having the sun in such a position. I took this earlier in the year during the college term up in Dublin. I will be starting back to college at the end of September and look forward to collecting more images from Dublin.

Recycling and Sustainability Project

Recently in college we had a project on recylcing and sustainability. Teamed up with Michelle Murphy we looked for materials that were mass produced but wasted on a general basis. The material we decided to base the project on was the indutrials strapping used on packaging, cardboard boxes, pallets of wood and brick etc. and it was readily available from any builders merchants. The theme we developed was along the lines of beach accesories and we designed and built a number of items from waste only. Among these we made a cooler, a folding beach seat, a beach mat, and a beach bag. The cooler was insulated using the foil backed card used on juice cartons with a layer of foam and then another layer of the juice carton material. Tested on a whole day at the beach when we got home at 8pm there was still frozen ice in the cooler from ice we put in in the morning to keep the icecream cool....the beach seat is just a frame made from old copper pipes with a piece of the strapping attached around it... the beach mat is weaved from many of the straps and the bag is made by rivetting sections of the straps to make a structural frame in the shape of a bag. Congrats to my partner Michelle for such a successful project and thanks to Elaine for modeling our stuff at the beach. all images from beach can be seen here

My Exoskeleton

One of the projects we had to do in college was to do with shoes, movement and the body. For it I designed and built this exoskeleton. it started off as being shoes with legs that mimic the movement of the user's legs and then I decided to add a top half to the body aswell that included arms with grabbers. The joints are sprung, on the legs using bungee ropes to allow them to oppose the direction of movement of the users legs so that they return to start position after each movement. The shoulder joints and hip joints are aticulated in 360 degree by 180 degree movement allowing easy reproduction of the movement of the users limbs, including swiveling of the legs, steps in any direction, twisting of the arms and reaching in any direction. The unit is supported and connected via the waist where it is belted onto the user providing ease of control for the user just by the movement of their body.

Welcome to my new site!

Hello and welcome to imageryofBen. The aim of this site is for it to be a place where I can bring all of my online content (photographs, deisgn, ilustration, animation etc.) together into one place to make it more accessible and easier to view. This space will also be used to feature various examples of my work either design or photography as and when they occur from my industrial design course in NCAD or from my day-to-day creative indevours... So feel free to have a look round and let me know what you think... Thanks, Ben (-:
